Natural wonders, winter sports and a side serving of culture on Japan’s northernmost island

With its dramatic landscapes and snow-capped mountains, Hokkaido is on many a traveller’s bucket list. The island’s jaw-dropping scenery is ripe for year-round exploration – from volcanoes to bubbling thermal springs, fields of rainbow-coloured flowers to its world-class ski scene. Pinch yourself, then dive right in.

Things To Do

NATURE
In winter, join an icebreaker cruise to see the otherwordly ryuhyo drift ice along the coast, or marvel at the ‘frost flowers’ of ice that form on ethereal Lake Akan. In summer, the rolling fields of Biei burst into life with flowers of every hue. Spring is cherry blossom season, while autumn is the perfect time to visit the World Heritage site of Shiretoko Peninsula, as the trees around its five tranquil lakes turn gold.

ACTIVITIES
Nestled in the shadow of Mount Yote – an active volcano – Niseko is Hokkaido’s world-class ski resort. Celebrated for its powder snow by winter sports lovers, it’s the place to get your heart racing. For something different, try ice fishing or snow shoeing. And whatever the season, don’t miss Hokkaido’s most famous attraction: its thousands of onsen (hot springs). Sink into mineral-rich waters bubbling up from the earth – and relax.

CULTURE
Hokkaido’s charming capital Sapporo is a melting pot of knockout regional cuisine, beer and culture. Soup curry is a firm local favourite, along with fresh seafood from the island’s waters. Tour the city’s brewery, and take in the views from the iconic TV tower. If you’re visiting in February, wrap up warm and don’t miss the enormous ice sculptures on display during the city’s renowned Snow Festival.

Top Tip from SLH

Made with fresh Hokkaido milk – said to be the best in Japan – a scoop of the island’s soft-serve ice cream is a must-try on any visit.
