Ancient castles, blooming heaths – explore the unexplored in Lanaken

Sitting in Belgium’s borderlands, Lanaken is a hotpot of cultures and a gateway to the diverse landscapes of Hoge Kempen National Park. Renowned for wildlife watching, hiking and cycling, the family-friendly park has much to offer, while further afield, moated castles, riverside walks and charming villages complete the picture.

Things to do

NATURE
Adventure into the Valley of the Ziepbeek, a serene nature reserve within the National Park known for its diverse habitats. Its heaths and marshes are a haven for birds, and in the late summer a profusion of heather transforms the valley into a vibrant purple wonderland. This explosion of colour gives the Purple Loop scenic trail its name. The loop takes in picturesque ponds and streams, along with the heavenly heather. For a different viewpoint, hop on a rafting trip along the River Maas, enjoying gentle currents and an ever-changing panorama.

HISTORY
Dive into medieval life at Pietersheim Water Castle, exploring its ramparts, ruins, and pretty moat, or head to Oud-Rekem village for a wander around cobblestone streets and heritage museums, including an ancient apothecary. Oud-Rekem is also home to Aspremont-Lynden Castle, which – while built for nobility – has also been used a prison and a psychiatric hospital.

CULTURE
Close to the border with the Netherlands, Lanaken’s culture is multi-faceted. Head into Maastricht for urban delights and a rich food scene, along with vibrant arts, crafts and a number of fabulous museums. Visit in May to partake in lively Lanapalooza festival, with musical performances by local and international artists, or time your trip to coincide with carnival season, where colourful parades and dazzling costumes are the order of the day in the run-up to Lent.

Top Tip from SLH

For the best views in Hoge Kempen, make for the Terhills area. Once former mining spoil tips, these elevations are now reclaimed by nature, offering spectacular vistas across the park.
