Things to Do
CULTURE
For culture vultures, a visit to Forte Filippo or Forte Stella, two of the area’s remaining Spanish fortresses should be top of the list. Art buffs can head inland to visit the neoclassical Convento della Presentazione al Tempio and see world-renowned artwork. Then for total immersion into local culture, stroll the pedestrian-only narrow streets of the old town – pit-stopping at restaurants for classic Tuscan cuisine along the way.
WATER
While the coast around Porto Ercole is dotted with beautiful beaches, for a special daytrip hire a local captain and set sail to nearby Giglio island. While you’re there, hike the pine-filled hills looking down on colourful houses lining the coast, ancient Roman remains and the sailing boats navigating the Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy a spot of lunch in the picture-perfect harbour. Or, for a different perspective of the waters, slide on some fins and dive into the blue – perhaps finding a hidden cave or two.
WILDLIFE
Hire a bike and pedal around the coastline, looking out for the dolphins and turtles in the Med as you cruise along. For more wildlife spotting, hike through the nature reserve beside Feniglia beach where deer roam through the shrubbery. Want more space to explore? Head to Maremma national park to discover 10,000 acres of parkland over the Uccellina hills – offering challenging treks and peaceful trails just a short drive from Port Ercole.
