Steeped in romance and roman history

Home to Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers, Verona is steeped in romance and history. Visit Juliet’s house, a 13th-century building owned by the Capello family, and declare your love to that special someone. Or stroll the pretty streets and spot ancient Roman walls, merchants’ houses and grand villas. Then listen to arias in the ruins of the Roman Theatre as night falls. Beyond the Renaissance romance, Verona is a bustling centre and we’ve hand-picked some of the city’s best hotels. In Verona you’ll be skipping the crowds of Venice while being a short drive away from stunning Lake Garda. It’s easy to see how Verona is quickly becoming one of the most attractive cities in Northern Italy.

Things to do

FOOD & WINE
Every Italian region has its own culinary heritage, and Verona is no exception. Visit a traditional Osteria and try local risotto, rich bowls of stew with polenta, or soft potato gnocchi. For a fine dining experience like no other, you could book into a Michelin-starred restaurant on a grand palazzo. And remember, this is Valpolicella country – so be sure to savour a glass or two.

LANDMARKS
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Verona is dotted with classical treasures. Like the inspiring Lamberti Tower that dominates Piazza della Erbe in the heart of the city. There are grand palaces to explore, from the Gran Guardia to the Barbieri. Plus the 12th-century Romanesque Duomo, filled with frescoes. For an eerie encounter with the Scaligeri family, Verona’s rulers in the 13th and 14th centuries, visit their elaborate Gothic tombs.

MUSIC
The majestic ruins of the Roman Arena are a sight to behold in the day. But at night, this ancient venue really comes alive. Sit in an audience of 30,000 and listen to operas, surrounded by 1st-century stones.
